[Military commission certificate for Silvanus Bourn, 1741 July].

Commission appointing Silvanus Bourn lieutenant colonel of the first regiment of militia in the County of Barnstable, whereof Shubal Gorham Esq. is colonel. The document, a partially printed form completed by hand, is signed by Secretary J[osiah] Willard and Governor Jonathan Belcher.

In 1737 George II appointed a commission to settle the boundary conflict between Massachusetts Bay and New Hampshire. Both sides appealed the commission's decision to the King, who settled the matter in an order in council issued Apr. 9, 1740.
